16552DV dual 16550 uart w/ fifo 44-plcc free shipping
These items are Dual Channel, 16550 type UART's (Universal Asynchronous Receiver - Transmitters), with 16 Byte FIFO's (First In First Outs) and with False Start Bit Detection, manufactured by National Semiconductor. They are 5 Volt chips, packaged in a 44 Pin Plastic Leadless Chip Carrier package.
These chips should be familiar to you, since they are the UART's that are incorporated into every PC. They are often incorporated into the motherboard chipset, but they are there - controlling the serial ports (as can be seen by looking at the Windows control panel under "System" and "Com Ports"). They are there for a reason: they were the best available (at the time of the creation of the PC); and now they are frozen into the PC design. Therefore, they must be used with PC related equipment (for compatibility).
Data Sheet: Here is a link to the manufacturer's data sheet for these fine UART chips.
Comparative price data: Digikey.com is now selling these exact same chips for $6.85 each (that is: for MANY times the price). Here is the URL (for copy/paste) so that you can see for yourself: http://search.digikey.com/scripts/DkSearch/dksus.dll?Detail?Ref=55842&Row=371201&Site=US
Product Condition: Most of these UART chips are new. They have been carefully removed from their sockets in mostly new industrial PCB's (that were kept as replacement inventory, then declared surplus).
