Micro-Now Instrument 420 RF Microwave Generator
At first nothing happened up top so I cranked up the big Variac RF Power knob and after a second all of a sudden the RF Power Meter jumped to the right and the Overload light came on. So I quickly switched off the power. When I turned it back on it didn’t seem like any harm was done, everything powered back up again no problem. I guess I should have allowed some warm up time for the vacuum tube. As I think you can see in the pictures, with the Variac set on 60 the Power Meter is showing 300 watts, and at least over the short term that level did not produce an overload.
I can find virtually nothing about this unit on the web, so I can’t say what power level it can sustain. I did notice that the Magnetron Current Meter did not seem to move during my brief bit of testing. I did find an outfit, Resonance Instruments, that acquired the assets of Micro-Now, and their website says they offer parts, repair, manuals, etc., as well as upgrades for certain Micro-Now products (the 420 conspicuous in its absence from that list). So I sent them an email asking if they could tell me anything about the 420. I don’t know why I bother on those rare occasions that I try contacting manufacturers; their email response said that they had stopped making the 420 because it was dangerous because it had no safety features, and inviting me to check out the replacement models, the 520 and 521. Gee thanks. So you have been warned, this unit could be dangerous if you don’t know what you are doing (like me).
Please check out my other listings for a couple of smaller Polarad RF/Microwave Generators, as well as more cool lab and test gear.
